U-14

The Clooney/Quin U14 Footballers secured the club’s 2nd Bord na nOg Division 3 Football title of the season on Wednesday evening at Clareabbey when they overcame Doora/Barefield by 2-10 to 1-3 in a most entertaining ‘Lodge At Doonbeg’ sponsored final.

‘A good start is half the work’ and following our captain Killian Donovan winning the toss and electing to play with the wind, the CQ boys swept up the field from the throw-in before releasing full-forward Darragh Ryan to plant the ball in the back of the net. Stephen Frain added a point from play before The Parish could draw breath. The hard working Harry McCarthy was next to raise a white flag and he was joined on the score sheet by wing back Daniel Griffin who kicked over the crossbar from distance. Our other first half scores came from frees by Alan Culligan and Darragh Ryan while Conor O’Brien pointed from play. Doora/Barefield were not out of it by any means and replied with a pointed free and a goal from play to leave just 5 points between the sides at the short whistle when the score stood at 1-6 to 1-1.

Unfortunately for The Parish, the wind all but disappeared at the start of the 2nd half and CQ were on the attack again. Conor Sheehy, who was introduced at the break along with Sean Hehir, was first off the mark with a point from play. There seemed little doubt about the destination of the title soon after when Killian Donovan bulged the netting for his side’s 2nd goal. Conor Sheehy, Barry Loughnane and Darragh Ryan all added further points from play in the remaining period while Doora-Barefield hit two points in reply.

This was a very committed and determined display by the CQ boys with all six defenders dominating their positions and giving good cover to their net minder Tadhg Shanahan. Barry Loughnane was a tower of strength at midfield while his partner Eimhinn Dunne worked tirelessly in a covering role. Up front, good combination play got vital scores for us while constant pressure on the Doora-Barefield backs prevented them from setting up passing moves. Great credit for this victory must also go to the mentors Peter Sheehy, Brian Rochford, Tom Meade and John Culligan while the cuts and bruises were looked after by Maria Dolan on First Aid duty.

For The Parish, their captain and goalkeeper Killian Flanagan was outstanding while Connor Kearns, Scott Currid, Eoghan Perill, Niall O’Brien and especially Cathal O’Brien were others to impress.

After the game, Joe Kelly of Bord na nOg Peil presented the cup to our captain Killian Donovan. Incidentally, this is the 3rd time that the cup has come to Clooney/Quin following the successful team of 2002 when David Kennedy grabbed the last minute match-winning goal and the team of 1996 with Fergal Lynch to the fore.

This Wednesday morning a venue has finally been appointed for this evening's Div.3 Football Final. It will take place at Clareabbey with throw-in at 6:30pm. Our opponents will of course be our neighbours, Doora/Barefield. We all wish the CQ boys the best of luck!

On Wednesday evening, on the new pitch at Clooney and in front of a large vociferous band of supporters, our U14 Football team made light work of their championship semi-final replay with Kildysart. Last week C/Q had to claw their way back in the final quarter to earn a draw. Well! A week is a long time in U14 football! Right from the first whistle they took the game to Kildysart. Two points each from Alan Culligan, Killian Donovan and Conor O’Brien and one from Eimhin Dunne gave the home side a 0-7 to 0-2 half-time lead. Darragh Ryan twice hit the Kildysart net in the 3rd quarter and the C/Q boys were now running rampant. Killian Donovan added another point before Conor O’Brien fired to the net for our third goal. Intermittent attacks by Kildysart did yield 1-4 for the visitors in the 2nd half but C/Q closed out the game with good points from Darragh Ryan, Alan Culligan, Harry McCarthy and Colin Lynch. On the stroke of full-time, Kildysart were awarded a penalty but our excellent net-minder Tadhg Shanahan saved brilliantly.

Final Score: Clooney/Quin 3-12   Kildysart 1-6

The final of this Division 3 Championship will be played next Wednesday at a venue to be decided. The opponents will be our near neighbours, Doora/Barefield.

Our U14 Footballers are still in the championship following a draw with Kildysart in last evening’s semi-final. Down 0-8 to 0-5 in the 3rd quarter, Clooney/Quin scored the final 3 points to tie the game. It is not yet known when the replay will take place but it may be this weekend.

Next up for this team is a home game with Shannon Gaels on Wednesday at 7pm.
