ClooneyQuin U14 Hurlers advanced to the semi-finals of this year’s Feile competition with a well deserved victory over Newmarket last Saturday. That was the final qualifying game in a round robin that took place in the Eire Og and St. Flannans pitches.  CQ were defeated in the opening game by Broadford/Smith O’Briens on a scoreline of 3-8 to 2-4. In arrears by a single point at half time, CQ levelled early in the 2nd period but the East Clare boys goaled soon after. With the help of a disallowed CQ goal that was brought out for a 20M ‘throw-in’, they were able to hold onto a 3 to 4-point cushion throughout the half before putting the icing on the cake by notching their 3rd goal with the last puck of the game. Our goal scorers were Ulick O’Sullivan and Cillian Enright.
Ethan Moloney and Ben O’Donnell raised green flags in our Round 2 game with Tulla while William Corbett, Eoghan O’Brien, Ulick O’Sullivan and Ciullian Enright added the points to give CQ a 2-4 to 1-0 victory.
With Newmarket also falling to Broadford/Smith O’Briens the stage was set for a ‘winner take all’ meeting with The Blues. After a fiercely competitive first half, two Cillian Enright pointed frees were the only scores on the board at the short whistle. Newmarket rattled the CQ net within 2 minutes of the 2nd period but the response was swift with Ulick O’Sullivan doing likewise at the other end.  Paul Hogan pointed from distance to give his team a 3-point lead that was wiped out when Newmarket bagged their 2nd goal. That was as good as it go for The Blues as the David Kennedy trained CQ side held firm in defence from there on and continued to create opportunities in the opposition half. Eoghan O’Brien put CQ back in front with a fine point from play. O’Sulivan was at the end of a good passing movement to rifle home his and CQ’s 2nd goal while another Enright free and a 2nd point from play by O’Brien left the final score at 2-6 to 2-0 in CQ’s favour.
The semi-finals and final of this competition are due to be played over the May Bank Holiday weekend when Corofin, The Banner and Broadford/Smith O’Briens will join ClooneyQuin in the battle for a place at the Feile na nGael finals in Ulster.
